SAINT-PAUL CATHEDRAL
Catholic cathedral consecrated in 2002 in honor of the apostle Paul, who is said to have founded a Christian community in Durrës.
Consecrated in 2002, this Catholic cathedral (Katedralja e Shën Palit) is the least impressive of Tirana's recently built religious edifices. The seat of the Tirana-Durrës diocese, it is dedicated to the apostle Paul, who is said to have founded Albania's first Christian community, in Durrës, in the 1st century. The sober architecture is unsurprising, but the interior is quite luminous. Two popes have already celebrated Mass here: John Paul II, in 1993, and Francis, in 2014. The forecourt is adorned with a statue of Mother Teresa, who visited her "heartland" in 1991.
