MOSAIC OF TIRANA
A small, unique archaeological site in Tirana, home to a Greek mosaic, a church and some early Christian remains.
The unique and tiny archaeological site of Tirana (Mozaiku i Tiranës) is made up of fragments of a Greek mosaic (about 15m2) which decorated the floor of a villa rustica, a Roman rural house of the 3rd century, with in particular a beautiful spiral pattern. The house was replaced by a church dedicated to Saint John around the 6th century. Discovered by chance during the construction of the Partizan district in 1972, the site also contains some early Christian remains, such as a portion of the church's ancient engraved stone iconostasis.
