STADE NATIONAL
Largest stadium in the country. To be rebuilt in 2019. 112 m high tower with shopping mall and Marriott hotel.
Dominated by a 112 m-high red-and-black tower, this sports complex, due to open in 2019, is known by two names in Albanian: Arena Kombëtare ("national stadium") or Stadiumi Air Albania ("Air Albania stadium"), in reference to the national airline founded in 2018, which is the main sponsor. The largest sports stadium in the country, it has a capacity of 22,500 spectators (30,000 for concerts). It is owned by the Albanian Football Federation (FSHF) and has the national soccer team as its resident team. It was built on the site of the former Qemal-Stafa stadium (19,700 seats), which dated from 1946 and was demolished in 2016. Only its monumental staircase has been preserved in the current structure. The new stadium was designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti (b. 1965), who also designed the Alban Towers, twin 110 m-high towers to be completed in 2021, 50 m north of Rinia Park. Costing 85 million euros, the stadium is 120 m long and 68 m wide. Its 112 m-high tower and facades are covered with red and black plaques evoking the colors of the national flag. There's also a shopping mall and a Marriott hotel due to open in 2023. Inside, one of the three grandstands is reserved for the press and VIP guests. The French soccer team was the first to play here, beating the Albanian team two goals to nil on November 17, 2019.
