PALACE OF CULTURE
Stalinist building on Skanderbeg Square housing the opera house, the National Library, cafés and the Adrion bookshop.
This Stalinist building (Pallati i Kulturës) borders the eastern part of Skanderbeg Square, with a monumental colonnade 100 m long. It houses the National Opera and Ballet Theatre (TKOB), the National Library (BKSh), several cafés and Adrion, Tirana's largest bookshop. Located on the site of the Ottoman charchia, it was designed by Soviet architects and Nikita Khrushchev came to lay the first stone of the building in 1959. However, following the break-up of the USSR, it was completed with the help of China in 1966.
