CLOCK TOWER
Behind the Et'hem Bey mosque. Small clock-making museum and two-hundred-step staircase to admire the city and Mount Dajti.
This Ottoman tower (Kulla e Sahatit) is one of the capital's landmark buildings. Construction began in 1821-1822, and was entrusted to Haxhi Et'hem Bey, who commissioned the nearby mosque. In 1928, the Albanian government purchased a new clock, and the tower was raised to its current height of 35m. Damaged during the Second World War, it was restored in 1946. It now houses a small clock museum. At the top of the two-hundred-step staircase, fine views of Tirana and Mount Dajti, unfortunately spoiled by recent buildings.
