SAINT-FRANÇOIS CHURCH IN SHKODRA
This Catholic church houses the world's only anti-Communist frescoes illustrating the anti-Catholic repression of 1947.
This 1905 Catholic church (Kisha Shën Françeskut) is home to some of the world's most unique anti-communist frescoes. They were painted in 1996-1997 by local figurative artist Pjerin Sheldija (b. 1937). They illustrate the plot hatched here against the Franciscan friars of Shkodra in 1947: weapons were hidden in the church by Communist agents with the aim of framing the friars. This was followed by widespread repression of the Catholic clergy.
