This island of 7.5 ha (Ishulli i Shurdhahut) is an ancient hill whose surroundings were buried under the waters of the Drin when the artificial lake of Vau i Dejës (25 km2) was created in 1973. It houses some of the ruins of the ancient city of Sarda, founded by the Byzantines around the 6th century. This one was in the 15th century the stronghold of the Albanian lord Lekë Dukagjini, the creator of the first Kanun, before being destroyed by the Ottomans in 1491. On the spot remain the vestiges drowned in the greenery of a church and a Byzantine citadel of XIe century.
