FORTERESSE DE LEZHA
Ruined Ottoman fortress. Beautiful views of Lezha, the coast and the north of the country. Skanderbeg died here in 1468.
Perched 186 m above sea level, this Ottoman fortress (Kalaja e Lezhës) has been in ruins since an earthquake in 1979. But it offers fine views over Lezha, the coastline and the north of the country. Occupied since Neolithic times, the site was, according to the signs on site, fortified by the Illyrians. In fact, it was the Greeks from Syracuse (Sicily) who created the fortress when Lissos (Lezha) was founded in 385 BC. The fortress served as the headquarters of Skanderbeg, who died here in 1468. Remains of a mosque and picnic areas.
