MOSQUÉE FATHI
Presented as the oldest in the country... which is not true. Modest building constructed in 1502 on the site of an ancient Byzantine church.
Modest in size and style, this mosque (Xhamia Fatih) is billed as the country's oldest. In fact, it was erected in 1502, almost a century after the ruined White Mosque in Berat. It is dedicated to Mehmet II, "conqueror"(fatih in Turkish) of Constantinople in 1453. The building retains part of the structure of a 13th-century Byzantine church in the north arcade and west wall. The interior features a sober rectangular prayer hall, preceded by a vestibule topped by a gallery.
