DURRËS AMPHITHEATER
The largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans. Poorly promoted, it has suffered serious damage in recent decades.
This Roman amphitheatre (Amfiteatri i Durrësit) is the largest in the Balkans. Built in the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Trajan, it could accommodate 15,000 to 20,000 spectators, roughly a third of the capacity of Rome's Colosseum. Sometimes still used for shows, it has been on Unesco's tentative list since 1996. However, the 136 m-diameter edifice is poorly showcased and has suffered serious damage as a result of the uncontrolled urbanization of the city in recent decades.
