PLACE D'ILLYRIE
Central square designed after the 1926 earthquake. Town hall topped by a clock tower, Durrës Grand Mosque, etc.
The central Liberty Square (Sheshi Liria), like neighbouring Epidamn Boulevard, was designed after the 1926 earthquake. Like the latter, it is planted with palm trees. The long boulevard is surrounded by administrative buildings, including the elegant red-walled town hall built in 1926. Neoclassical in style, it is topped by a clock tower. Opposite, at the top of the steps, stands the Great Mosque (Xhamia e Madhe), built in 1931 and remodeled after an earthquake in 1979. To the north is the Alexander-Moissi cultural center.
