GORICA BRIDGE
Elegantly placed over the Osum River, this bridge dates back to 1927. But its eventful history dates back to the century.
This 129 m long bridge (Ura e Goricës) spans the Osum in the center of Berat. Reserved for pedestrians since 2011, it connects the modern part of the city (right bank) to the small historical district of Gorica. The first wooden bridge was built in 1780. Several times damaged by floods, it was rebuilt in stone in 1927 with a 5.3 m wide deck resting on seven arches. Legend has it that a woman was locked alive in one of the pillars of the first bridge in order to calm the anger of an evil genie who was opposed to such a construction.
