KING'S MOSQUE
One of the oldest mosques in Albania (1502), it is located in the citadel and is modest in size. Minaret rebuilt in 2013.
This modest mosque (Xhamia Mbret) was built between 1492 and 1502 in honor of the Ottoman "king" (sultan) Mehmet II. Built during the reign of Bajazet II (1481-1512) it is one of the oldest in Albania. It consists of a beautiful porch with a tiled roof and a prayer hall of almost square shape (about 12 m on each side) whose space is separated in two by a wooden portico of three pillars. The building was converted into a political education center in 1967. Its 14 m high minaret, half destroyed in 1979, was rebuilt in 2013.
