FORTERESSE DE KANINA
Ruined fortress, entrance fee payable, closed in the evening. Valuable above all for its grandiose views over Vlora Bay and the hinterland.
This fortress (Kalaja e Kaninës) overlooks Vlora at an altitude of 380 m. It is an ancient Byzantine stronghold of the 6th century built on the site of a Roman fort of the 3rd century B.C. Remodeled by the Albanian lords, then by the Ottomans, it counted up to fourteen towers and preserves a well-preserved defensive gate, on the south side. The ruins are interesting. The view on the bay of Vlora even more so. You can also enjoy it in the nearby village of Kanina (300 inhabitants) which has a few restaurants and hotels with panoramic views.
