BAZAAR MOSQUE
The city's only ancient mosque, spared by the atheist campaign of 1967. The lower part once housed stores.
Dating from 1757, this mosque (Xhamia e Pazarit) was the center of the Ottoman charchia, the city's commercial (bazaar) and religious district. Built on a counter-slope (the lower part housed stores), it features a 22 m-high minaret topped by a slate-covered dome set on an octagonal drum. A staircase leads to the porch and prayer room (8.85 x 8.95 m), which retains some of its original frescoes. Gjirokastra's fourteen other former mosques were destroyed during the atheist campaign of 1967.
