OBÉLISQUE DE L'ÉDUCATION
Monument erected on a hill overlooking the bazaar district to commemorate the opening of the first Albanian-language school.
This monument (Obelisku i Arsimit) is located on a hill overlooking the bazaar area. It was erected in 2008 to commemorate the opening, in 1908, of the first Albanian language school in Gjirokastra, just next door. The 7-meter-high twisted obelisk is made of white stone from a famous quarry near the village of Progonat (36 km northwest). It is the work of three artists, including Muntaz Dhrami (born in 1936 in Gjirokastra), who is also responsible for the statue of Mother Albania in the Martyrs of the Nation cemetery in Tirana.
