CHURCH OF THE SAINT-SAUVEUR
Former Orthodox cathedral erected in 1784 with a nave, three apses and an adjoining 18 m-high tower.
Built in 1784, this ancient Orthodox cathedral (Kisha e Shën Sotirit) was the seat of the metropolis (bishopric) of Gjirokastra. Damaged during the atheist campaign of 1967, it lost most of its frescoes and its original icons were stolen in the 1990s. It is mostly closed, but one can walk around the building consisting of a nave, three apses and an adjoining tower of 18 m high. The headquarters of the metropolis is now located in the new Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ completed in 2012.
