GOLDEN GATE MUSEUM (ЗОЛОТI ЗОЛОТI)
The city's ancient fortifications and church, built in the 11th century, now house a museum on medieval Russia. In reality, not much remains of these fortifications and what we can see today is only a reconstruction of the Golden Gate containing the remains of the originals. The Golden Gate was the main access point to the city during the time of Prince Yaroslav. It was built in 1037 on the model of the Golden Gate of Constantinople and largely destroyed in 1240 during the Mongol invasion.
Next to it is a very pretty shaded garden and the statue of Prince Yaroslav Mudry (Yaroslav the Wise, Grand Prince of Kiev from 1019 to 1054, diffuser of Christianity and statesman builder), inaugurated in 1997. The prince holds in his hands the model of the cathedral of Saint Sophia, of which he was the instigator.
