Built in 1895 by Viennese architect Gorgolewski in Viennese'pseudo Renaissance'style, this magnificent opera is the symbol of Lviv par excellence. Come and attend a presentation of La Traviata, Swan Lake or other famous operas and ballets. For parts on Ukrainian themes choose Natalka Poltavka or Zaporozhets za Dunaem. The tickets are cheap and you will certainly have very good seats. The décor of the shows is often sumptuous and very rich, the fashion for minimalism and the "just essential" seems not to have touched this place of exuberance and baroque. If the troupe does not have the reputation of the Mariinsky of St. Petersburg, we usually spend a good evening. Like many others, the opera in Lviv closed its season in June and fell its rideau only in September. During this summer rest period you can still visit the interior of the building, which will cost 5 UAH.
