In the middle of the th century, when Lviv was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the river Poltva, which crossed the city, was turned underground. If the town lost its river, on the other hand it received one of the most advanced sewer systems of the time. Little by little, where before there were the edges of the Poltva, the buildings began. This is the form of the Prospekt Svobodi, the third'centre'of the city, the so-called Austrian centre. At the north end of the boulevard are the theatre of the Opera, one of the city's maps, built in the early th century. In the middle is the monument at Taras Shevchenko. The area around is very lively, especially in summer when it becomes the favourite meeting point of the inhabitants of Lviv. At the other end of the boulevard is the monument to Adam Mickiewicz, a Polish poet.
