PLACE DU THÉÂTRE (ПЛОЩА ТЕАТРАЛЬНА)
At the centre of the Theatre Square is the dramatic art theatre (Чернiвецький театр iм. Oльги Кобилянськоï) which is the pride of the city. This green building, built in 1905 by Austrian architects Fellner and Gelner (authors of the Vienna and Odessa Opera House), is one of the city's most beautiful monuments. In the Art Nouveau style, it also features Renaissance, Baroque and classical influences. The main façade is decorated with bas-reliefs illustrating scenes from Sophocles' Oedipus. Next to the theatre, on the right, is the building of the former House of Jewish Culture, built in 1908, in pseudo-baroque style, on a project by Tadeusz Levandovski, architect from Lviv. Then, we can see the former House of Romanian Culture, built in 1938 in the constructivist style. On the opposite side, located between two twin houses, stands the former Chamber of Commerce building, built in 1910 in modern style. Today it houses the Academy of Medicine. On the frieze of the façade we see Mercury, protector of travel and trade, as well as enamel panels representing the symbols of craftsmanship.
