CASTLE (ФОРТЕЦЯ-ЗАМОК)
Overlooking the town of a hill in the centre of Uzhgorod, this castle was built between the th and th centuries. Ancient chronicles link the foundation of the castle to the Slavic prince Laborts.
Several reconstructions followed in order to consolidate it and, in 1775, it became a seminar and remained so until 1944. In Soviet times it was used as a barracks, then as a room for exhibitions at the regional museum. In square shape, the castle has imposing loudspeakers and four massive towers each corner. Inside the courtyard, you can see the remains of the first church of Uzhgorod, the Church of St. Yuri, mentioned in the chronicles in 1248. Today, in the main palace, the Regional Museum (Закарпатський краєзнавчий музей) is of low interest. Local wine tastings are organised within the castle (from 10 am to 18 pm).
