ODESSA OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE (ОПЕРИ БАЛЕТУ НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ АКАДЕМІЧНИЙ ТА АКАДЕМІЧНИЙ БАЛЕТУ)
For 11 years, the city lived without Opera, before the Odessites called for an international architectural competition to rebuild the building. The two Viennese architects who won the competition in 1884 did not attend the work carried out under the aegis of local architects. But when one of them came to see the result, he would have conspired that it was the most beautiful work in his life. The work, characteristic of Viennese Baroque style, has three entrances, one in the garden. You can admire the sculptures that coiffent the roof of the building: Melpomène muse represents the art dominating passions, Tertsiko muse represents dance. Four niches are home to statues of composers and poets, including Pushkin, Griboedov, Lyudmila and Gogol. The room of 500 m ² has 1 640 seats. The interior has an eclectic blend of Baroque, rococo and Renaissance and its two gala staircases have always been very famous. Formerly splendid, the interior benefited from restoration work undertaken in the time of the USSR, which required the use of 12 kg pure gold. The acoustics of the site are excellent, the greatest names of theatre, ballet and opera have occurred there, including, Chekhov, Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky and Sarah Bernhardt. Closed for seven years, the opera reopened its doors in 2008.
