OUSPENSKY MONASTERY (УСПЕНСКИЙ УСПЕНСКИЙ)

The monastery is particularly impressive, with its rock-backed church and its icons painted on the cliff at metres high. The monastery was founded in the th century and houses a famous fountain in the Virgin Mary. As a result of the region's Islamization, Christians were forced to flee to this village at the top of the mountains. The tradition of Tolérance tolerance allowed Christian populations to stay in the valley near the monastery. But the impoverishment of the region, after the fall of leaders, caused a rapid exodus in the th century. The monastery of the Dormition was reopened during the Soviet period in 1993 and monks are currently living there.
