The Armenian community appeared in Crimea in the th century. Built in the th century, the Sub-Sarkis Church (Saint Serge) is a perfect example of Armenian architecture in the Middle Ages.
Right next door is a belfry built later. There are many khachkar, «Holy Cross», of the ex-voto placed at the walls. In the courtyard of the church lies the tomb of Aivazovski. He was baptized and married here. Later his second wife Anna Nikitichna, who died in 1944, was also buried here.
