FINLANDIA PALATE
The Finlandia palace designed by Alvar Aalto hosts concerts, but the story goes that the acoustics are not the architect's greatest achievement. With its heavy crenellated facades of white Carrara marble supported by a black marble base, the palace could be compared to a huge white piano. In 1975, it served as an international forum for the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, where 35 countries signed the Helsinki agreements. In 1990, at the beginning of the Persian Gulf crisis, it hosted the meeting between Bush and Gorbachev.
