On the shortest night of the year, fires are lit, parties are held and people dance all night long! A traditional celebration.
Juhannus, or the shortest night of the year. Fires are lit all over the country. In the Swedish-speaking enclaves, flagpoles are erected and garlanded, around which people dance all night. Midsummer's Day was traditionally celebrated on 24 June, two days after the summer solstice. By law, all moving holidays were moved to the nearest weekend. On this night, the brightest of the year, all Finns take part in the celebration. In Helsinki, the night lasts only two hours; in Rovaniemi, the midnight sun does not set.
