CASA TERRACOTA
Ecological house located in Villa De Leyva, with an unusual architectural work, with unconventional rounded shapes
An ecological house out of a fairy tale! This large building just outside Villa de Leyva has the particularity of having been built exclusively with sun-baked clay (terracota). An unusual architectural work, with unconventional rounded shapes, reminiscent of Gaudí's creations. Casa Terracota is a life project for an alternative and ecological approach to housing. The construction took about fifteen years. Its author is the Colombian architect and ceramist Octavio Mendoza Morales, artist and environmental activist, who wanted to show that it was possible to combine housing and design, simply by using the four elements: earth, air, water and fire. The house has the particularity of being resistant to rain, earthquakes and being naturally isolated from the temperature changes of the outside air. Casa Terracota is said to be the largest ceramic structure in the world! The interior is just as impressive as the exterior, with many nooks and crannies, between the living rooms, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms covered in mosaics. Many sculptures in clay, glass and metal, as decoration. It can be visited every day, but try to go during the week, because on Saturday or Sunday, when the house is invaded by tourists, it loses its charm. The visit is not guided, too bad, but when discovering the house, imagination and reflection quickly take over.
