CATEDRAL DE SANTA MARTA
Church housing the remains of Rodrigo de Bastidas, the Spanish conquistador who founded the city in 1525
This church with its dazzling white façade was built between 1766 and 1794. It houses the remains of Rodrigo de Bastidas, the Spanish conquistador who founded the city in 1525. The libertador Simón Bolívar was buried in the cathedral in 1830, before his remains were transferred twelve years later to the Pantheon of Caracas, Venezuela. The rectangular tower to the left of the façade has a bell tower in its upper part. At the back of the temple is a dome that gives the building a Renaissance style.
