The "city of the eternal spring" honors the large-scale flower arrangement and the traditional office of silletero.
Since 1957, the beginning of August in Medellín is filled with colors and floral scents during the famous Festival of Flowers. A popular celebration that lasts about ten days, where the paisa culture is celebrated with various cultural events (antique car parades, popular music bands, etc.). What attracts the most people are of course the parades with flowers and the silleteros, the flower bearers. The silleteros were originally small farmers who came down to the city with their sack full of flowers, to sell them or exchange them for other products. The parade echoes this ancestral tradition of the carriers. Nowadays, the silleteros parade to the rhythm of popular music groups and folk dancers. But if the parade is a popular celebration, the silleteros see it as a real competition that will bring them great fame. In fact, the first prize is awarded to the most talented silletero in his category: traditional, monumental, emblematic or commercial. The floral compositions must be carried on the backs of men, dressed in traditional costume, and we take into account the artistic appearance of the floral mosaic, the number of varieties of flowers and their freshness. Each composition represents several weeks of work. Some are really impressive! These festivities are very popular, so remember to book your hotel well in advance.
