EL GATO DEL RÍO (Y SUS NOVIAS)
This bronze cat of 3,50 m height and 3 tons located at the edge of the Rio Cali, is one of the icons of the city
On the banks of the Cali River, El Gato del Río ("The Cat of the River") is one of the city's icons. This bronze cat, 3.50 meters high and weighing 3 tons, was created in 1996 by the painter and sculptor Hernando Tejada (1924-1998). Ten years later, the Chamber of Commerce of Cali, feeling a little lonely, encouraged the installation of new cat sculptures. Las Novias del Gato ("The Cat's Girlfriends"), created by renowned plastic artists, each have their own symbolism.
