IGLESIA SAN FRANCISCO
Church containing treasures of colonial art, with a gold inlaid monstrance and a baroque pulpit carved in wood
Built on the site of a 16th century church destroyed by the earthquake of 1736, it is undoubtedly the most beautiful church in Popayan. Behind its beautiful pale yellow baroque facade (unlike most religious buildings painted white), it contains treasures of colonial religious art, including a gold monstrance encrusted with emeralds, a baroque pulpit carved in wood and finely crafted sculptures. The imposing bell made of bronze, copper and gold is also a true marvel of its kind.
