Classified as an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009, the Carnival of Blacks and Whites of Pasto is one of the most important traditional festivals in the south of the country. A festivity that dates back to the colonial era, when the colonists painted their faces black on January 5, and the slaves painted them white the next day. This tradition has continued until today, symbolizing the cultural and ethnic diversity of Colombia.
