ALTO DE LOS IDOLOS & ALTO DE LAS PIEDRAS
Alto De Los Idolos with some of the most important archaeological sites in the region, including tombs
Located about 30 kilometers from San Agustin, near the village of San José de Isnos, the Parque Arqueológico Alto de los Ídolos is worth a visit. It offers some of the most important archaeological sites in the region. There are mainly tombs (37 dating from the first century BC to the eighth century AD). Their form varies, from monolithic sarcophagi hidden under earthen mounds, to tombs covered with large flat slabs. The bodies were buried in the most varied positions: standing, squatting, lying on their stomachs or, of course, on their backs for important personalities. Inside the burial chambers, which have sometimes retained colorful geometric designs, various objects could be placed around the body, including ceramics, tools or jewelry. Another rite consisted in exhuming the bodies in order to place them in funerary urns, which were kept inside the houses. It is also on this site that we can discover the highest statue discovered to date, La Vigilante, which is more than 5 meters high and represents a half-man half-caitian deity.
Near Alto de los Ídolos, the Parque Arqueológico Alto de las Piedras, on an artificial plateau, houses funerary chambers, decorated with colorful geometric figures, and some statues, one of which is among the most famous of San Agustín: "el Doble Yo" with its intriguing double face.
