PARQUE ARQUEOLÓGICO TIERRADENTRO
Archaeological park in Tierradentro, with several sites open to the public, with access on foot, with a loop circuit
The archaeological park has several sites open to the public, located in the territory of San Andrés de Pisimbalá(municipio de Inzá). At altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 2,700 meters, everything is accessible on foot, provided that you are at least in shape. The sites can be visited in a loop circuit of about 7-8 hours for the whole circuit, but it is preferable to visit the sites in two days. The entrance passport gives access during 2 days to the museums and to the different archaeological sites. Bring a lamp to observe the patterns of the hypogeums at your leisure. Do not photograph them with a flash.
Segovia. Located on a hill at 1 800 m of altitude, at only 20 minutes of the entrance of the park (ticket office and museums), it is the most impressive site of Tierradentro, a real wonder. There are about 30 decorated tombs. The most beautiful one has kept its original colors. One of the hypogeums is still in the same state as it was discovered, with its urns containing human remains and its funerary furniture.
El Duende. Located a little higher up, about 15 minutes walk from Segovia, this site has five hypogeums, still with beautiful murals!
El Tablón. About 40 minutes from El Duende, statues very close in style to those of the archaeological park of San Agustin: naive workmanship, rigid expression, disproportionate head. From El Tablón, you can reach the village of San Andrés de Pisimbalá in about 20 minutes.
Alto de San Andrés. Seven hypogeums located at half an hour walking distance from El Tablón. Or about twenty minutes from the administration and the same time from the village, if you don't want to make the complete tour of the sites. On the way, you can refresh yourself in the river.
El Aguacate. Located at 2,700 m, on a ridge that you can reach after 1 hour and 15 minutes of climbing up and down from El Alto San Andrés, this site is worth the climb! The panoramic view is splendid on the valley and the village of Inzá in the distance. The hypogeums discovered in El Aguacate are considered as the oldest of Tierradentro, their architecture being less complex than in the other sites. It is possible to descend for about 1 hour and a half to the entrance of the park.
El Hato. This site is further away, a 1 hour walk by road from the entrance (15 minutes by car) and is not included in the classic loop. At this site there are statues, mounds and petroglyphs dating from 125 to 260 AD.
