Created in 1987, the International Festival of Popular Music of the Amazon "El Pirarucú de Oro" takes place in the capital of the Colombian department of Amazonas, which then becomes the cultural capital of the entire Amazon. During three days, the music and traditions of the region are honored, with authors, composers and orchestras from Colombia, Brazil and Peru. The pirarucú is a huge fish, threatened with extinction. To preserve the species, its fishing is prohibited by the three bordering countries, between November (when the festival begins) and March.
