From 7 to 9 May, Bari celebrates its patron saint with a historic procession through the city and a parade of the "caravella" over the sea.
This patronal feast commemorates the arrival, on May 9th 1087, of the relics of the saint, stolen from Myra by merchants from Bari. The celebration begins with a solemn procession in which the statue of the saint is carried to the port. It is placed on board a boat, accompanied by the bishop, and surrounded by the boats of the faithful. The procession continues at sea, to the port of San Giorgio, where the crew re-enacts the episode of the arrival of the sailors with the relics of the saint. The festival ends with a historical parade and a fireworks display.
