CATTEDRALE SAN NICOLA PELLEGRINO
Cathedral called queen of the cathedrals of Puglia, dedicated to San Nicola Pellegrino.
Built in the Apulian Romanesque style, the cathedral of Trani, called the "Queen of Puglia's cathedrals", is dedicated to San Nicola Pellegrino (Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim), a young 18-year-old Greek shepherd who died in Trani in 1094 (he is said to have arrived here on the back of a dolphin). Completed in 1143, the cathedral consists of three churches: the upper church with three naves, the lower church and the crypt of San Nicola and Santa Maria della Scala. The facade of the cathedral, made of Trani marble, is characterised by a magnificent double staircase leading to the square and adorned with a magnificent bronze door made by the sculptor Barisano in 1175 (which is a copy, the original is preserved in the side nave). The bell tower was built later, in 1239, but was not finished until the mid-14th century.
Inside the building, around the presbytery of the upper church, the remains of a 12th century mosaic can be seen. The crypt of San Nicola, dating from the early 12th century, has 43 cross vaults and 28 marble columns. The crypt of Santa Maria della Scala emerges on the ruins of the ancient church of Santa Maria, founded in the 5th century on the remains of an early Christian church. It is divided into three naves, with 22 granite and oriental marble columns. The crypt houses the tomb of a nobleman and the remains of several important frescoes attributed to the painter Giovanni di Francia (1432). From this crypt you can reach the 7th century hypogeum of San Leucio.
