MONASTERO SAN BENEDETTO
One of the most important and prestigious monuments of the city, founded by the Cistercians in 957
Founded in 957 by the Cistercians, the Monastery of San Benedetto is one of the most important and prestigious monuments of the city. Abandoned by the monks after the fall of the Swabians, it was recovered by the Benedictines in 1266. These "warrior sisters" exercised true feudal jurisdiction over the clergy and the population, until the abrogation of such privileges by Joachim Murat in 1810. Don't miss the church with its ceramic dome, the Romanesque cloister and the Archaeological Museum housed in the convent.
