CATTEDRAL
Cathedral built on the ruins of an ancient temple in Conversano.
Built on the ruins of an ancient Christian temple, the cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1911 and restored to its original state. The construction began at the end of the 11th century and was completed in the 14th century by Bishop Pietro d'Itri. It bears witness to the permanence of Romanesque art in the Gothic Age, with the addition of a large rose window in the centre of its tripartite façade. Inside there is the icon of the Madonna della Fonte that, according to tradition, arrived in Conversano in the 5th century (but it is dated to the 13th century).
