CASTELLO ARAGONESE
Castle occupied by the Italian navy and located at the entrance of the canal.
The Castle of Taranto, also called Castel Sant'Angelo, was built by Ferdinand of Aragon at the end of the 15th century, on fortifications of the Byzantine period (10th century). Enlarged by the Spaniards, it was further rebuilt in the 19th century. It is now occupied by the Italian Navy and has recently been opened to the public. The imposing castle is located at the entrance to the canal, which allows ships to pass from one sea to another. The cylindrical towers have survived from the original construction. Archaeological research has uncovered more than 3,000 years of history.
