CASTELLO
Castle built by the Pappacoda family, located on the edge of the San Marco ravine.
It's on the edge of San Marco Ravine. A previous fortification from the 10th century occupied this location and protected the city from invaders arriving from the sea. The present castle was built in the 16th century by the Pappacoda family. It dominates the urban landscape with its four large towers, three circular and one octagonal, connected by a thick surrounding wall. In the 18th century, another family that owned the building, the Imperiali, had the wall and the tower facing the ravine rebuilt by the Lecce architect Mauro Manieri.
