CASTELLO SVEVO
Trapezoidal castle, residence of King Victor Emmanuel III.
Built at the beginning of the 13th century, the Swabian castle of Brindisi still retains the imprint of Frederick II, despite the alterations carried out under Ferdinand I of Aragon and Charles V in the 15th and 16th centuries. Trapezoidal in shape, it has six towers and a bastion. During the Second World War, between September 1943 and February 1944, the castle was the residence of King Victor Emmanuel III, Queen Elena and Marshal Pietro Badoglio, who, fleeing from Rome, established their base in Brindisi and promoted the city as the temporary capital of Italy.
