OBELISCO DI SANT'ORONZO
Baroque spire of 21 meters high, surmounted by the statue of Saint Oronzo
This 21-metre high baroque spire was erected in 1771 by Giuseppe Greco, modelled on the obelisk of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Oberdan in Naples (1747). It is surmounted by the statue of St. Oronzo, patron saint of the town, who protected it from a plague epidemic in 1740 (St. Oronzo is also the patron saint of Lecce). The exuberantly decorated structure is adorned with putti with dedicatory inscriptions and bears, halfway up, on the four corners, the statues of four holy figures.
