CHIESA DI SAN MATTEO
Church with impressive Baroque facades in Lecce, featuring concave and convex lines, and an elliptical interior.
This church, located at the intersection of several streets, has one of the most characteristic baroque facades of Lecce, with concave and convex lines, inspired by the Roman models of Borromini. It was built between 1667 and 1700 by the architect Giovanni Andrea Larducci on the site of a previous 15th century building. The interior, of elliptical plan, is decorated with statues of the Twelve Apostles, by Placido Buffelli, and baroque altars framing various paintings among which a detached fresco of the Madonna and Child in late Gothic.
