CHIESETTA SAN MARCO
Church attributed to Gabrielle Riccardi, the first architect of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce
Next to the Palazzo del Sedile, this small church was founded in 1543 by a Venetian colony in Lecce that had its shops on the site of the present Piazza Sant'Oronzo. It was attributed to Gabriele Riccardi, who was also the first architect of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce. The church was dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, as the winged lion carved into the tympanum of the portal recalls. The chiesetta evokes the privileged ties that united Lecce to the famous Republic of Venice.
