CHIESA DI SANTA CHIARA
Church with chapels and richly decorated altars in Lecce.
Founded at the beginning of the 15th century, the Church of St. Clare was completely renovated from 1687 onwards under the direction of Giuseppe Cino. The octagonal-shaped interior contains richly decorated chapels and altars. A curiosity: its 18th century ceiling was made of papier-mâché, a typical Lecce handicraft. It consists of a wooden frame on which about 300 papier-mâché modules have been fixed, covering an area of 300 square metres. Next to it, the small street (Via Arte della Cartapesta) that runs along the left side of the church leads to the Roman theatre.
