CHIESA DI SANT'IRENE
Church dedicated to St. Irene, built from 1591 in Lecce.
The church was built from 1591 on a drawing by Francesco Grimaldi. It is dedicated to St. Irene, who was the main patron saint of Lecce before St. Oronzo took the first place from her in the 17th century, when he saved the town from a plague epidemic in 1658 . The elegant façade is characteristic of the religious buildings of the Counter-Reformation. On the portal there is a beautiful statue of Saint Irene by Mauro Manieri (1717). The interior, with a Latin cross and a single nave, is composed of three deep chapels, communicating with each other.
