MUSEO DELLA CARTAPESTA
Museum to admire a collection of works by the best papier-mâché artisans in Lecce
In Lecce, the papier-mâché of our childhood is part of the traditional know-how. The technique of cartapesta (literally "crushed paper") developed under Spanish rule (1557-1707), but it was also practised elsewhere, notably in Naples. It spread to the whole of Salento and was propagated during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the Castle of Lecce there are some beautiful rooms that house this museum where you can admire a collection of works by the best cartapestai (papier-mâché craftsmen) from the 18th century to the present day.
