CHIESA SAN PIETRO
Church with a Greek cross and three small semicircular apses.
An important church of the city in the heart of the maze of small streets. Built between the 9th and 10th centuries, in memory of the passage of St. Peter to Otranto, it is one of the most representative buildings of the Byzantine style in the whole Salento. It has a Greek cross plan with three small semicircular apses. The arms are covered with barrel vaults and the cross has a hemispherical dome. The interior preserves the remains, restored, of frescoes dating from the 10th to the 13th century, with inscriptions in Greek.
